09/05/08 Year 11 Prom – Rivington Hall

After 5 years of waiting, Prom has already been and gone! Months of preparation, hundreds of pennies, gallons of fake tan, nails and fancy up-dos left us all excited for the event of the year – our last even high school party.

The weather was fantastic (Maybe too hot, with us all dieing on the coaches) and it set of the beautiful setting perfectly. It was great to see so many smiling couples, amazing dresses and lads looking smart for once.

So the evening began with a fast service, great quality, three-course meal, including the huge chocolate fountain. Then the disco began, with fab songs and everyone joining in. It was fantastic to talk, laugh and dance with old friends and some people I had never even talked too!

Another great opportunity was the stunning photos, despite the horrendous queue! The weather was beautiful, the dancing and screaming was so much fun, and everyone get on together, as a year group, so well! I just wish I had had more than 3 hours sleep!

Thank you to everyone who went organised and helped to make prom a special occasion we will always remember.

01/05/08 Summer School Arts Attack 2008-

The Summer Arts school at Bridgewater High School Arts College is back…….

We’re inviting young people in Warrington to participate in one of our two fun packed weeks.  This year we will go on a journey around the world, using myths and legends form India, China, South America and Africa as our theme for both age groups.

For more information go to Arts College webpage and click on Summer Arts School – Arts Attack 2008.

11/04/08 WE NEED YOUR OLD AND          BROKEN MOBILE PHONES

My form (9LR) is collecting old and broken mobile phones.  A specialist company, who will either mend and resell them, or recycle the metal and plastic components, will collect the phones from school.  The money raised from this goes to charity.  9LR chose Save the Children as the charity they would like to support.

We want any make and model of mobile phone, without SIM card.  No chargers/cases/accessories thanks!

Our target is to collect an average of one phone per Bridgewater pupil!  That’s a target of 1700 phones.  We get new mobile phones on average once every 12/18 months; so most people have at least one phone ‘gathering dust’ at home.  Even if it has a broken screen and doesn’t work, please bring it in and drop it at the school office.  WE’LL DO THE REST!

Thanks – Lucy Robinson

14/03/08  Headslines

Apparently we have Pope Gregory to blame for the earliest Easter break since 1914 and the shortest half term for a very long time.  Unusually school will close on Thursday 20th March making Good Friday the first day of the holiday and we re-open after Easter on Thursday 3rd April.

In the next few months we will welcome into school approximately 80 students from our partner schools in Germany, South Africa and America.  These exchanges continue to provide valuable opportunities for our students to develop greater social and cultural awareness and continue to be highly valued by the parents who support them.  We are particularly grateful to those parents who have volunteered this year to host students during their stay with us.

Short though the half term has been, our annual school play took place recently over three evenings.  Those who managed to get tickets for the performance of Joseph must have been impressed by the overall calibre and quality of the performance.  Congratulations to the very many pupils who took part in the performance and to the large team of staff who supported them throughout.

Although the summer term is considerably longer than usual as a result of the early Easter holiday, public examinations in fact start a little earlier than usual.  All pupils sitting public examinations in years 11,12 and 13 have now received copies of the examination timetable.  We wish them all well as they prepare for the final “push”.

Finally may I wish every one a peaceful Easter break.

6/3/08  Bridgewater High School Orienteering Team have a new team colours provided by

the PTA

Our orienteering team were the envy of all the other schools at last weekends event.  The striking Royal Blue and Yellow orienteering shirts were provide d by a kind donation from the schools Parents / Teachers Association at the school.  At long last we were clearly identifiable at the events dressed in the school’s colours.  The modern design consists of a diagonal yellow section with blue triangular inserts.  Bridgewater is printed diagonally across the back with “supported by PTA” in smaller letters underneath.

29/2/08  UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge

On the 7th February pupils from Bridgewater High School took part in the first round of this year’s UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust.  The challenge was taken by pupils in years 9, 10 and 11 in Mathematics set 1.  The challenge is a national competition and if pupils do well they have the chance to qualify for the future rounds.

The challenge involves answering multiple choice questions.  Questions vary in difficulty but this is reflected in the number of marks given for the different questions.  Questions also involve a penalty of losing marks for a wrong answer.

Here is an example of one of the questions:  ‘A solid wooden cube is painted blue on the outside.  The cube is then cut into 27 smaller cubes of equal size.  What fraction of the total surface area of these new cubes is blue?

A  1/6    B  1/5  C   ¼   D  1/3    E  ½

During the week commencing 25th February, the results of the challenge were revealed to pupils.  Those who performed well were awarded a gold, silver or bronze award.  Nine pupils achieved a gold award, thirty eight pupils achieved a silver award and forty two pupils were awarded a bronze award.  Six pupils qualified for the next round.  Hannah McDonnell in year 10 scored the highest score in the school with a score of 88.

We wish our six qualifiers success in the next round.

27/2/08 Trip to Rome

During the February holidays, a small group of 20 Y11and 12 pupils went to Rome.  It was the best school trip I have ever been on.  We went to all the most famous historical places in Rome, including the Colesseum, the Ancient City and the Vatican City.  We even saw Orlando Bloom at the Spanish Steps and had plenty of time to shop and walk around in the sun.  It was a fantastic 6 days and we all learnt such a lot.

Rome was an amazing trip.  We went to all the sights in Rome and had lots of free time to do what we liked.  On the last night we went to the Hard Rock Café and had a really nice meal.  It was a great end to a brilliant trip.  I now feel like I know a lot about Roman history and I made lots of new friends.

19/2/08 Ski USA – Sierra at Tahoe 2008

During this trip we all had a great time in South Lake Tahoe and it was pretty hot.  The skiing was really good and the snow was well good.  The instructors were really cool and many of the girls were often caught checking them out.  The collisions were spectacular including the breakage (in half) of Georgina's ski and the head on crash between Caitlin and Miss Woodard. Overall it was a really good holiday and a good way to end year 11.  Lydia

Overall I think the holiday was truly breath taking.  The sun was reflecting off the luxurious white powder snow.  The slopes were challenging but Bridgewater managed to show enough enthusiasm to pull the challenge off.  Everybody improved dramatically over the week.  When we arrived at the top of the first chair lift, we looked down on the valley to see magical views of Lake Tahoe and mountains covered in deep snow.  We saw dragon sheep (a Lake Tahoe myth).  Matt, Jonny, Ash, Esme and Grace

20/02/08 Lots of new subtitled films in Upper School Library……..

Thanks to the continued support of the PTA, at least 20 new French and German films are being added to the collection we already have.

The increasing numbers of students borrowing films is really encouraging….. and the Languages Faculty would very much like to promote this with a competition.

Would you like to win a voucher for a pair of cinema tickets?  Simply borrow a foreign language film and hand in a review to the librarian.  These reviews will then be judged and there will be end of term winners.  Why not have a go?

To whet your appetite, here are a few of the latest additions:

Joyeux Noel (French & German 15) a wonderfully portrayed account of the football matches played in ‘No man’s land’ at Christmas during WWI.

Three Men and a Cradle (French) the hugely successful original that the American, ‘Three Men and a Baby’ was based on.

Mon Pere ce Heros (French PG)  entertaining tale of a cheeky teenager’s antics on holiday that wind up getting her doting father in a real pickle.
