Welcome to the Maths Faculty

Setting

Mathematics is taught in sets from Years 7 to 11. Pupils are set into two bands with six classes in each band. Pupils are set challenging targets from Y7 based on prior achievement data and their progress is monitored closely. Setting is flexible and changes are made each year based on test results and teacher recommendations.

Teaching and Learning

At Key Stage 3 all pupils follow the new Programme of Study for Mathematics, which was introduced in September 2008. We aim to develop understanding of key concepts and process in Maths, which can be transferred to other areas of the curriculum and life in general. In Y9 pupils start their GCSE Maths course, AQA Specification B (Modular).

The GCSE Maths course consists of 3 modules:

          Handling Data              18% of GCSE
          Number                       27% of GCSE
Algebra and shape       55% of GCSE

Pupils in set 1 complete the first 2 GCSE modules in Y9 and the final module in Y10. In Y11 pupils can either sit Additional Maths GCSE or AS Maths. All other pupils complete the first GCSE module in Y9, the second in Y10 and the final module in Y11.
Pupils are either entered for Higher Tier (grades A* - D) or Foundation Tier (grades C - G) depending on their performance in lessons/tests and their target grade.

At Key Stage 5 the faculty runs AS/A2 level modular courses in Maths and Further Maths (EDEXCEL) in addition to GCSE re sit courses.

The faculty has high expectations of all our pupils and our teaching style encourages pupils to take an active part in Maths lessons. Pupils are encouraged to think about Mathematics and its applications rather than solely practising skills.

Specialist Status

From September 2006 the Maths faculty has benefitted from the following opportunities funded by the second specialism 'Science with Maths':

  • ·Mrs Kandola spends a morning each week working with the main feeder primary schools. The aim is to stretch the more able pupils and improve transition/ provide enrichment activities for all pupils.
  • · Maths classrooms on the Upper site have been refurbished to include an interactive whiteboard and a suite of computers in each classroom.
  • A more personalised curriculum and an extra set in Y11
