1 Starter: investigate the effect of multiplying by 0.1, 0.01 etc. and hence the effect of multiplying by 10^-1, 10^-2

Main: converting between ordinary numbers and standard form; ordering numbers in standard form – just a selection of questions since they should have covered this for the SATs..

Plenary: converting e.g. 35.6 x 10⁴ into standard form or use '10 quick questions' to practice converting between ordinary numbers and standard form

Homework: add/subtract numbers in standard form

2 Starter: multiply and divide numbers in standard form

Method:
(2 x 10⁴) x (4 x 10³) = 20000 x 4000 = 80000000 = 8 x 10⁷ (3.6 x 10⁷) ÷ (1.2 x 10³) = 3 x 10⁴

Main: refine methods for multiplying and dividing numbers in standard form. Numbers used in non calculator papers will be straightforward.

Method:

(2 x 10⁴) x (4 x 10³) = 2 x 4 x 10⁴ x 10³ = 8 x 10⁷
(3.6 x 10⁷) ÷ (1.2 x 10³) = 3 x 10⁴
Choose examples to show that this method is easier for negative powers
