LAN

• Usually limited to a building or a number of very local buildings
• Privately owned – permission needed to access from outside the network
• Cabling is often Ethernet
• Computers use network cards
• Connect to outside networks via the server/proxy server

WAN

• LAN’s connected together
• Using different hardware to connect between LAN’s eg Existing Telecomms system, Satellite links etc…
• Piggy backs on 3^rd party hardware (Eg BT)
• 

  Satellite links, existing telecoms systems, 3^rd party

  The WWW is a WAN
