Introduction to ICT theory, expectations, structure of year, interim exam week(s).
14.1 ICT Policy and strategy
  • Understanding the need for an IT policy in the organisation and the elements it might contain
  • Understand the concept of adopting a strategy to improve/develop IT within an organisation
  • Understanding the term "Future Proofing" and the complex nature of it's application
  • In class discussion will map out reasons for Software/Hardware upgrading and come to answer this question:
"Why do we need to upgrade our ICT system?"
  • Using a template mind map students will add detail to the reasons identified.
 Homework:
  • Read relevant chapters and produce concise notes
  • Draft an IT policy for Bridgewater high school with the necessary elements
  • Complete the keyword meanings

  • Backup Policy/Procedure will be discussed as an extention to AS theory. Students will use their Backup Mind map from AS and add detail where necessary.

 3 14.2 Software
This focuses on three areas:
  • Matching the software for the purpose/user(s)
  • Choosing evaluation methods and criteria in order to compare products
  • Summarising your findings (from previous bullet point) and then making and justifying recomendations in a "Software evaluation" report
In 14.2 pupils will decide on criteria which could be used to help make an informed choice when purchasing software. A scenario will be set where they create a report to support a software upgrade.

14.3 Database management concepts
The concepts of how a central Relational Database (RDBMS) can be managed within an organisation acrros depts or geopgraphical locations will be discussed. The main points being answered are:
  • What is a Database Management System (DBS)?
  • Who is the Database Administrator (DBA), and what is their job role?
  • How is the data structured and commonly represented?
  • What are the advantages of a RDBMS?
  • Client/server v's non-client server databases?
  • What is Normalisation
