The Year 9 course is a challenging and exciting overview of key 20th Century topics. The journey starts by investigating the causes, course and consequences of World War One. Students will carry out an independent enquiry that demonstrates their understanding of the role of individuals and the experiences they faced. This independent enquiry gives them a chance to explore areas of self-interest and to engage with primary and secondary soucres.

Later in the academic year World War Two and the assassination of JFK are covered. The latter allowing pupils to explore the idea of historical controversy and evaluate evidence in order to reach their own sustained judgement.

Civil Rights in the USA is the final topic studied, allowing pupils to investigate the contradictions within American society and investigate the impact and significance of individuals such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X.

In the last term there is the opportunity for students to research and produce a project of their own on any 20th Century historical event. This allows students to consolidate and demonstrate their historical skills developed throughout Key Stage 3, whilst pursuing a study of self-interest.
