The training needs of pastoral managers have not been addressed
adequately in recent years. There are no national standards for the role, their
specific contribution to the success of the school is generally hidden in OfSTED
reports and recent NCSL offerings have lacked an appropriate content and skill
base. Now however, a set of major challenges looms on the horizon, to which
schools must yet again respond. These arise from the government’s new Five Year Strategy and associated
initiatives, including the creation of Children’s Trusts, Extended Schools,
the five outcomes of ‘Every Child
Matters’, ‘Personalised
learning’ and Workforce
Remodelling. If these are
handled well, could they help with some of the traditional problems and concerns
of pastoral leaders as well as those of other
agencies?
