If you think you have a problem on your home computer there are several ways to protect yourself: (You should consider all of them)

Viruses  Definition of a virus
1/ Update your virus software with the latest virus definition files. (Remember your protection is only as good as the latest files)
You should really set your software to scan every file that is opened to be fully protected rather than to rely on a timed system scan. Repair is better than delete as key system files may be infected. Prevention is always better than cure as your operating system may need to be reinstalled if a virus damages vital files.

2/ Use an online virus checking program, this will automatically have the latest virus definition files and is a good one-off check if you think you have a problem. (It should not replace your computers own virus checker)
